Summary
Dr Reddy’s is the second largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in India, behind Ranbaxy. The company sells APIs, branded drugs and generics. Most of its branded drugs are copies of drugs patented in the West, but not in India.
Total sales in fiscal 2006 amounted to US$548 million, a rise of 24% over 2005. Branded formulations accounted for 41% of revenues, with APIs accounting for 34%. India was the company’s largest market in fiscal 2006, with around one third of sales.
The company’s current best selling product is ramipril (Altace, King Pharmaceuticals), first introduced in non-US markets in 2003. Sales of ramipril amounted to Rs 1,314.2 million in 2004, equal to 6.5% of total company revenues. In 2005, the company faced increased competition for this product, and revenues fell to Rs 783.4 million.
The company has made efforts to break into the US market with mixed results. It has had a few ANDAs approved, for major products such as ciprofloxacin, fluconazole and citalopram. The company is currently involved in a US patent dispute with sanofi-aventis regarding Plavix (clopidogrel). US sales have been massively boosted in 2006 (fiscal 2007) with the recent launch of Dr Reddy’s authorised generic simvastatin.
Dr Reddy’s is also represented in western Europe, Russia and Asia. In 2002, the company made its first overseas acquisitions, both in the UK. In November 2005, Dr Reddy’s announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Roche’s API business in Cuernavaca, Mexico. In March 2006, Dr Reddy’s completed its purchase of the German generic pharmaceutical firm, betapharm, from 3i, in a deal worth 480 million euros in cash.
